Just putting the phone into the phone holder, allowing it to rotate 360 degrees around an object to take photos. This 3D scanner can take pictures of a small product (15*15*30cm) from different angles, and use RealityCapture to generate a 3D model in the computer.

Structure Design

The 3D scanner is made with three parts. The arm, the body and the box. The arm is used to hold the camera and to adjust its level and angle. The middle part of the body is connected with the arm and it turns 360 degrees. The box part is used to store the hardware and to support the body.

Software

A PID controller is used to control the speed of the movement. A motor that control vertical motion allows the camera to take pictures from more angles, which improves the accuracy of the generating models.

Scanning

To make the structure of the 3D scanner, we used 3D printing as the main structure. For the rest of the details, we used the PMB tools for auxiliary processing, and all the materials are reusable materials found in trash cans (very sustainable). We used two DC motors and two PID controller to make it stable.
